Jake's Cafe, Wednesday 7th November

This is how music should be.
Written by Emma Whitehead

For those who weren’t at Jake’s Cafe on Wednesday  7th November, picture this... one of the oldest buildings in Harrogate providing natural acoustics, the lighting dimmed to a romantic orange glow against the brickwork, the stage set as part of the crowd, and the room filled with a close group of family and friends. For music lovers everywhere this is performance stripped back to the basics. No need for gimmicks or fancy effects, just the artists and their pure talent Ont’ Sofa. This is how music should be.

Thabo, the main vocals for Extra Curricular, presented the evening- Cool is the only way to describe this man! Annie Drury stunned with her opening act, singing her original songs and playing the keyboard, she is beautiful in every sense of the word. Billie Tweddle followed next, and at only the age of 13 it is unbelievable just how talented this young girl is. Billie plays with such ease and confidence, writing her own songs that access the emotions of every person irrelevant of age or gender. Jasmine Kennedy, who performed a couple of weeks ago at Lure Bar, took to her own at Jake’s, proving not only to be an acoustic sensation, but a comedy genius too. And let’s not forget those pillow cases and t-shirts of cats she creates in her bath tub- Meow girl! The wonderful Kal Lavelle (not Carl!) brought the evening to a climatic finale. Words cannot come close to describing the atmosphere that she lifted in this small, intimate upper room in Harrogate, one cold November night. Standing next to her before she took to the stage it was humbling to hear her words of praise for the other artists, especially with her performance that was to follow and close the evening. She had everyone dancing on their feet, and even had the crowd performing at the choruses (what a talented bunch!).

Atmosphere, emotion, raw talent and friends. Wednesday 7th November at Jake’s was a night that will be relived in the minds and tête-à-têtes of everyone who was there, for years to come. What a success!

Prime Studios Leeds November Sessions

Off t'Leeds!
Written by Emma Whitehead

With the van bursting at the seams with all the recording equipment, our production team with the know-how (Jason, Ben, Tom, Toby and Emma), and most importantly the infamous sofa, we were off t’Leeds! We are lucky enough to be able to record our northern sessions at the Prime Studios in Leeds for a couple of days once a month. These studios give us the space and acoustics to host our great artists and make music happen.

Day 1
 Jonty Brown kicked off our November session with his great original song ‘Black Cloud’. Jamie Lee Harrison followed covering two songs, ‘Too Close’ and ‘Break Even’- His fantastic voice blew us away. A delicious lunch was delivered right to the studio by Lahore Deli Bar, to fuel the troops ready for a jam packed afternoon.  Jake Quickenden entered the studio with a smile and jump in his step, and instantly stunned us with ‘Humpty Dumpty’, a beautiful song written in memory of his late little brother- this one brought a tear to all of our eyes. His original songs ‘Board Games’ and ‘Mile High’, and cover of ‘What’s My Name?’ soon brought us high as a kite, and ready for the next artists of the day. Strangers In Paradise played Ont’ Sofa next, these three guys brought their own unique brand of melodic rock to the sofa. Then finally the Rupert Stroud band amazed us with their vocals, keyboard, bass and drums, covering ‘Cry Me A River’ and Rupert’s own song ‘No Peace Of Mind’.
What a first day!

Day 2
Still reeling from a fantastic first day we returned to the Studio raring and ready to go on the Tuesday afternoon. Todd Dorigo started off our second day with two of his own songs; ‘Shy Boy’ and ‘Bit On The Side’, his talent and confidence hailed him a one take wonder. Brilliant! Stolen Haven were our final band to perform Ont’ Sofa. After a few wardrobe changes (no make-up artist, to their disappointment!) the boys dove straight into their song ‘Decent Shoes’, and then brought a second song out of the hat called ‘Clouds’.
What a finish to the November northern sessions!

A great big thank you and well done to all the artists who performed Ont’ Sofa these last couple of days in the studio, you have given us some great new material that we are very excited to upload to the website in the next few weeks. Keep your eye sockets and ear holes open for what is to come!

Love from the Ont’ Sofa team :)

Mike and Jasmine- an acoustic sensation!

Shivers of Delight!
Written by Emma Whitehead

Lure Bar in Harrogate has become the place to be on a Friday evening for your weekly live music fix. Last week Ont’ Sofa introduced two fantastic artists; Mike Bradford and Jasmine Kennedy, to dazzle the crowd with their vocal and acoustic talents.

Mike began the evening with his striking Newton Faulkner acoustic skills, delighting everyone with both his own songs and individual twist on covers. His performance ranged from heart melting soft harmonics, to fun and bubbly acoustic runs. To look around the bar, not a soul could keep their eyes and attention off this talented artist.

Jasmine, too, gave a compelling performance. Her presence and soft delivery was so touching it reached every hair on the back of our necks, sending shivers of delight through the crowd. During her a capella, Reasonable Reaction, only her beautiful voice filled the room as everyone wanted to take every sensation in, I am sure even the traffic stopped outside!

There is not just a reasonable reaction to these evenings; there is fast becoming an unbelievable reaction to this growing live acoustic music scene. Come down and see more fantastic artists this Friday and every Friday at Lure Bar in Harrogate. With two for £5 drinks, what excuse do you have left?

PRESS RELEASE: Extra Curricular Live at LURE BAR

EXTRA CURRICULAR SMASHED IT!
(Written by Emma Whitehead)

Extra Curricular, the Huddersfield based group combining soul with elements of rock, hip hop, and modern bass culture appeared on Friday night live at the stylish Lure Bar in Harrogate. Joined by Lewis Fieldhouse, Ben Jones and Yo Preston, the evening promised to be a night to remember!

Behind the scenes before the crowd poured in, Extra Curricular loosened their airwaves and strings with a sound check that stunned the few to hear.

Lewis Fieldhouse melted the hearts of the filling crowd with beautiful acoustic songs, followed by Yo Preston who began to liven the ambience with his acoustic pop. The pair then treated the ever filling Lure bar to a duet, which set the mood for Ben Jones’ captivating acoustic performance.

With Lure Bar now full to the brim, Extra Curricular took to the stage. The lights shone with a spark off the saxophone, trumpet, guitar and bass strings, as the drummer beat through the souls of the audience. Everyone took to their feet with the lead singer, Thabo Mkwananzi’s, cool and enigmatic vocals and vibe. Along with a saxophone solo to match John Coltrane, Jack Flash rapped us into a frenzy.

There was nothing that the night did not have to offer an audience which was left in a spin and crying out for more. Even the sky snowed in its appreciation. What a magical night!

Ben Davis- ‘Ever since I first saw Extra Curricular four years ago, they have been one of my favourite bands and were top of my list to get in for a session when Jason and I launched ontsofa.com. We have been privileged to record several sessions with the boys over the last ten months and being able to have the full band perform at Lure Bar for us has been amazing. The night was a huge success and all the acts were great! We are so looking forward to bringing more fantastic bands to nights like this and building the live music scene in Harrogate.’

Ont’ Sofa provide live music performances every Friday at Lure Bar in Harrogate, come along and see some great live acts and enjoy the 2 for £5 offer on drinks.

The website launch feat. 1 million views!!

The website launch feat. 1 million views!!

1,000,000 channel views.. That's more than the population of Cyprus and Fiji.. If you counted for 24 hours a day, it'd take you 3 weeks to count to a million.. Pretty crazy, right!

We've launched the BRAND NEW website!! Not only that, but we've flown past 1,000,000 channel views!! So we thought we'd throw a huge party to celebrate!!

We filled the evening with a bunch of incredible musicians and artists. Dave Hattersley, Billie Tweddle, Tom Peacock and Tom Gee Band blew us all away with their phenomenal sets.

The music finished, so we continued to party until the early hours. Champagne got popped, Jagerbombs ploughed through and shot's knocked back. I think it's safe to say that we all had major beer fear the morning after.

We'd like to thank each and every one of you for your continued support in helping us to achieve a big milestone in our journey.

Big love,

The Ont' Sofa family!

Gibson Sessions, London

GIBSON SESSIONS!!

We've been away in London for a few days filming sessions for those who can't make it to us, and what better place to do this than Gibson HQ!! I promise you, this place is truly incredible. Just a room filled with immaculate guitars, that any day are to be shipped out to celebrity clients.

We were up at 7am and into the studio for 9, fairly quick to say I'm not at my best in the mornings - most of the time the boys have to drag me out of bed!.. After unloading a long wheel based van of  all it's contents, dragging it into a small passenger lift and up 6 flights of stairs, we were finally in and ready to roll!!

First in we had four beautiful ladies who go by the name of The Scarletz, with impeccable voices and flawless looks these girls are definitely one to watch out for. If you've recently been to an Olly Murs or Tinie Tempah tour show, then you'll probably recognise these lot! Check out there session below:

Next in we had Becky Hill from BBC's The Voice, again another mind blowing performance that sent shivers down all of our spines. There's something really special about this girl, not forgetting the fact she's absolutely crazy, in a good way of course.

Later we were joined by Tiffany Paige, Billie Tweddle & Mary Leay. Three incredibly talented performers who came to grace our sofa at Gibson HQ.

Check out Billie's session... (She's only 13?!)

After visiting a huge Irish pub in Leicester Square and a comedy evening in Soho (which resulted in Ben nearly getting hit by a falling light), we jumped onto six mattress' in the loft of a student house in Brixton. After rising early to get ready for our second day, we realised that sleeping underneath exposed insulation wasn't the best of ideas. Most of us couldn't breathe.

After a short tube ride and a full English, we were back behind the camera's. Youcef Preston, Lewis Fieldhouse and Lucy Kitt popped in to finish off a hugely successful trip to London and Gibson.

It was time to celebrate a successful few days in London, so we flew down to Troy Bar in Shoreditch for it's weekly open mic night, hosted by Basement Jaxx's 'Vula'. It was like no other open mic night I've ever been too, this was on a whole other level, every performance was absolutely outstanding, the room was just filled to the brim with a range of incredibly talented artist and musicians. Without a doubt it's a huge recommendation if you are around the Shoreditch area on a Tuesday evening, but I'd get down early because it soon fills up with an electric vibe.

'Till next time,

Joe

That time when we went to say hello to Kal Lavelle!!

So one day we decided to check out if the lovely Kal Lavelle would let us film her set at Thetford Forest, when she supported Ed Sheeran! To our delight, she said yes.

We drove the 4 hour drive down in the blistering heat (for once) with a boot full of gear! Cameras, lights, recording devices, microphones, wellies etc etc. This is what we came up with...

Whilst we were having a brew backstage watching people working and wondering what to do with  ourselves we spotted Ed Sheeran wondering back from the stage after soundcheck. Ben (the one with the balls) quietly went up to Ed to see if he minded doing an interview with us.. and to our delight, he said yes.

After about 20 seconds of being flustered, nervous, excited, giddy... we got down to business and began the interview! It was our first one as a team, don't you think Ben did well?

What a lovely guy! We really enjoyed rocking up at Thetford Forest :)

Hopefully a lot more of these to come. But for now.. back to work!

A Little Bit About Us!

Ok so surely you've read our first ever blog post??

Now I'd like to introduce the team which makes Ont' Sofa tick!

Ben Davis (founder)
@iambendave

Ben likes nearly everything - normally things which involve danger. His favourite sayings could be any of the following: 'whooops' 'yeeessss' 'this thing likes to...' 'i like to...' 'just gonna give this a touch'

Ben has won an innovation award for living in a shop window for a week with me and making our local hospice a whopping £15,000 for charity! Ideas usually stem from Ben and either discarded or nurtured by the rest of us. But where did the idea start... normally Ben!

Ben shoots the sessions on DSLR cameras and edits the videos along with Tom.

Jason Odle (founder)
@Jason_Odle

I can't write much about myself - I don't like it! However I do like nearly everything - more often than not, the things which aren't very dangerous. My passion is for music. I have been playing drums, guitars and keys now for about 16 years. I played in a band called Kasiuss which you ALL need to check out and now play in a couple of blues/funk/function and originals bands.

I record the audio for Ont' Sofa onto my mac using ProTools and I edit the audio afterwards and send it to Ben or Tom to align with the video! I love the process and as we evolve, so will our gear and speed... one day we might have a business ;) fingers crossed!

Tom Bentley (cameras and editing)
@TomRBentley

Tom has been with us from day 1! ...when we didn't have a clue who he was. Luckily though, he's not a bad egg!

Tom has an extreme passion for photography and more recently, video! He brought his DSLR to our first session on the 26th January 2012 and started rolling! (rolling being the word for.. erm.. pressing record!)

Tom is our official photographer and has moved into the office along with Ben and I to produce creative stuff together!

Oli Hooten (webby stuff)
@oliabc4

Oli is our newest recruit! A young-en whose passion is websites/databases/php coding/gibber gabber.. guff etc etc. He now sits in the office too and together we try to make sweet things happen!

Oli likes to go to Uni in September to study something powerful but we don't know what. But good news is he'll still be on the team and our web content should be slick! (if it isn't you can email in and complain, or suggest. preferably the latter).

Joe Stanley (all he wants to do is twitter but we make him do other things similar against his will!)
@JMStanners

All you have to do is follow him on that social network site thing.. and you'll find out! Joe loves to be involved and more than anything.. live the dream. Ask him to lift something for you, he's not interested, but ask him if he wants to lift a beer then there's no stopping him!

Great to have as part of the team as a light-hearted guy, Joe takes care of (you got it) social media, press and promotions!

So there you have it! The Ont' Sofa Team. In a nutshell. We're simple really. Just mates having a good time earning very little - working very hard for you all to enjoy.

We hope you like it as much as we do!

Over and out,

Jason
